The Victoria Falls Town has grown to meet the levels of tourism for visitors of Victoria Falls, the town is a decent little town with a number of cafes, restaurants, bars and a wide range of accommodation options to serve the visitors.
As a traveler, here are some things to see and do while on your holiday.
The Victoria Falls Bridge
The Victoria Falls Bridge is a popular tour attraction spanning the Zambezi River, the bridge offers stunning views of the Victoria Falls and is a great spot for bungee jumping. If you are not interesting in plummeting to earth at breakneck speeds but still want a thrilling experience, consider the gorge swing instead. It is higher than the bungee platform though if you are scared of heights, may be just stand back and enjoy the views from the falls.
Alternatively you can take a walking tour that is done in the bridge, this is a great way to get more information and see the bridge as well.
Victoria Falls Wildlife Park
The Victoria Falls Wildlife Park is a great place to go on a safari and have an up close encounter with animals, the park is home to a variety of wildlife including elephants, giraffes, zebras and more which you will enjoy seeing.
High Tea at The Victoria Falls Hotel
This is one of the best things and experiences to have in Victoria Falls Town, this fascinating experience – The High Tea is hosted at the Victoria Falls Hotel, on the Stanely’s Terrace.
The High Tea is a wonder way to spend some time at the hotel looking out over the bridge to the mist from the falls. The experience is from 3 pm to 6 pm daily and you have to book prior, you can usually just book a day or two in advance but it sells out regularly and quickly.
If you are on your own, High Tea Experience is also available in a “half” serve that is if you are one person. Or you could avoid breakfast and lunch and give the full 2 person service a red hot go.
It is possible to combine the visit to Victoria Town, the falls and do the High Tea with the cultural Tour and the following experience
- A guided walking tour of Victoria Falls which lasts approximately 2 hours
- Visit Lookout Café perched 120 meters above the Zambezi River rapids
- Discover the bridge and learn about its history and construction
- Short tour of Victoria Falls Hotel, this hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Zimbabwe and enjoy the famous high tea on Stanley’s Terrace with spectacular views of the Victoria Falls Bridge. Also visit the big tree which is over 1000 years old.
- You will also visit the township of Victoria Falls and learn about local customs, see how local people live and browse craft markets with handcrafts made by Zimbabwean artists.
Victoria Falls Private Game Reserve
This private game reserve is located within the Zambezi National Park boasting the Big 5 as well as the reintroduced black rhino, visiting the reserve offers you a chance to have some safari time during your holiday to Victoria Falls.
White Water Rafting on the Zambezi River
White water rafting is an exhilarating experience to do on the Zambezi River, there are grade 4-5 rapids which mean it can be almost terrifying at time. It is advised to book your experience with a reputable company and listen to what your guide tell you and do exactly as they ask.
It is super fun and after the first rapid, you will gain confidence and relax into the experience.
If you prefer something a little less thrilling, consider the Upper Zambezi Raft Float, its way more sedate and still you will get to experience the river.
Take The Dinner Run Steam Train
The Rovos Rail’s 14a class locomotive will take you on a fine dining experience from the Victoria Falls Station – opposite the hotel across the bridge stopping for some photo time, and then down to Jafuta Siding where you partake in a 3 course dinner prepared by the Victoria Falls Hotel Team.
The whole Trip is about 3-4 hours depending on the season and usually runs Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. The experience costs around $450 AUD but is worth it.
Get An Aerial View Of The Falls
Helicopter and microlight trips over the falls are available with both 15 in and 30 minutes options. The microlights are really fun and can get quiet low over the water and wildlife, helicopter flights are more readily. Be prepared to have your Gopro or Camera strapped on to you for amazing photos and videos.
Note: on the microlights, you have unobstructed views for the best photos
Microlight flights are available from Livingstone only, but it is not hard to cross the bridge to that side as you only need to have a Zim Zim Visa.
Do A Sunset Cruise On The Zambezi River
The Zambezi River Cruises are very popular and there are various options for budget travelers to upmarket boats some of which include dinner. This is a great way to finish your Victoria Falls or Livingston experience, however prior booking is recommended, booking this tour on that same day you are going to do it is not a good idea unless you plan for an early start and an early finish at the falls.
It can take heaps more time than you imagine to walk all around the falls, cross into Zambia or Zimbabwe, view the other sides and get home. Having a time frame that you have to meet isn’t something recommended for that day, so it is crucial to book your sunset cruise another day.
Do The Boma Dinner and Drum Show
The Boma Restaurant offers a dinner and Drum Show that is really entertaining to watch, the menu includes things like Crocodiles and warthog, and they also have some great vegetarian meals.
The more adventurous fare is definitely for meat eaters.
Go Abseiling Down Victoria Falls
Abseiling down Victoria Falls is one of the best and must do adventures at Victoria Falls, it is amazing to be able to abseil down one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, obviously you don’t abseil down the actual falls but you do get to do it which is pretty cool to do as an experience.
